{"id":2730,"date":"2024-12-04T16:18:42","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T14:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chikov.com\/studentsko-finansirane-koga-otpadat-po-davnost-studentskite-zaemi-v-obedinenoto-kralstvo-2\/"},"modified":"2024-12-04T16:18:42","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T14:18:42","slug":"studentsko-finansirane-koga-otpadat-po-davnost-studentskite-zaemi-v-obedinenoto-kralstvo-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chikov.com\/en\/studentsko-finansirane-koga-otpadat-po-davnost-studentskite-zaemi-v-obedinenoto-kralstvo-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Student finance: When are UK student loans written off?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><b>Student tuition fees in England will be increased for the first time in eight years.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will increase the amount of debt many students leave university with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do student loans work?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The details depend on where in the UK you live, but student loans are typically made up of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a loan for tuition fees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a maintenance loan to cover living costs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people are entitled to the tuition fee element,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/student-finance\/who-qualifies\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is equal to the annual cost of your course.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2025, the cost of an undergraduate degree in England<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c0qdgndz5wzt\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will go up from \u00a39,250 to \u00a39,535 a year.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate maintenance loan is intended to cover accommodation, food, books and equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintenance loans are means tested, so the amount you get depends on your family's household income. You might get extra money if you are disabled, or have children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are under the age of 25 and have no contact with your parents,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/finance\/student-finance-england\/finance-independent-students#estranged\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you might be able to apply as an \"estranged student\".<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means your parents' financial situation is not taken into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/2024\/05\/09\/landmark-hepi-report-shows-students-studying-outside-london-need-18600-to-have-an-acceptable-standard-of-living\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research in May by the Higher Education Policy Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested maintenance loans in England actually cover only about half the cost of living, and less for students in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Student Loans Company says graduates in England leave university with average debts of \u00a348,470.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How much can I borrow for living costs?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount of maintenance help available varies across the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undergraduate students in England and Wales will be able to borrow more for day-to-day living costs next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum maintenance loan for students from England living away from their parents outside of London, for example, will increase from \u00a310,227 to \u00a310,544.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Scotland, the maximum annual maintenance loan is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/student-finance-apply\/household-income\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a39 400<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for under-25s. Students studying away from home can borrow up to \u00a311,150<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/student-finance\/full-time-undergraduates#:~:text=Students%20studying%20away%20from%20home,can%20be%20taken%20as%20loan.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if their home is in Wales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u00a314,170 if they go to London) and \u00a36 776<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/articles\/student-loans\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if they're from Northern Ireland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u00a39,492 if they go to London).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do I get my student loan payments?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tuition fees are paid directly to your university or education provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maintenance loan is paid directly to your bank account in instalments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are at the start of each term in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and monthly in Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to be paid<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/student-finance-how-youre-assessed-and-paid\/student-finance-how-youre-assessed-and-paid-2024-to-2025#how-do-i-get-paid\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you'll need to register<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at your university or college. You'll usually do this in the first week of your course and you may have to take along your student finance entitlement letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In England you should get a text from the Student Loans Company a few days before to let you know the maintenance loan is on the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can apply for funding up to nine months after the first day of the academic year for your course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The application process is different depending on where you live.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How much interest will I be charged?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are charged interest on the loan from the day you take it out, but the amount varies across the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to understand that the terms and conditions can change after you have borrowed the money. Any interest rate rises will apply to all student loans, not just new applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students in <\/span><b>England,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the interest rate is normally set at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/how-interest-is-calculated-plan-5\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the retail price index (RPI) measure of inflation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is currently<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/repaying-your-student-loan\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4,3 %.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wales, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the rate is up to 7.3% depending on your earnings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scotland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is 4.3%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Northern Ireland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is 4.3%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount graduates pay back will depend on how much they earn.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When do I have to start paying back my student loan?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/repaying-your-student-loan\/what-you-pay\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to start repaying your loan until you earn a certain amount of money after graduation.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The threshold for students in England is \u00a325,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Wales it is \u00a327,295, in Scotland \u00a331,395 and in Northern Ireland \u00a324,990.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not repay anything if you earn less than the threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earliest you will start repaying is the April after you leave your course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payments are made automatically through the tax system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You generally repay 9% of the amount you earn over the threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When are student loans written off?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In England, students starting university this year will see their loans written off after 40 years, regardless of how much is owed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>Wales <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Scotland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is 30 years and in <\/span><b>Northern Ireland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you leave your course early<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you still have to repay your student loan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may opt to make extra repayments to
